The original name in Latin is Virtuti militari (Latin; military valor).The Order of Virtuti Militari was established on June 18, 1792 by King Stanislaw August Poniatowski of Poland (1764-1795).This cross "Virtuti Militari" of the 5th degree (class) was awarded to the lower ranks of the Russian Imperial Army for the suppression of the Polish uprising of 1830-1831. The award was established on December 31, 1831 by decree of Emperor Nicholas I (1825-1855). The award was made until January 1, 1843. About 100,000 crosses were issued from the chapter.
