Germany. Bayonet knife of the 1884/98 model (new type) for rifles and carbines of the Mauser system. It differs from the basic model by the presence of a saw on the butt of the blade. Compared with conventional bayonets of the 1884/98 model (new type), it was produced in small quantities. Produced by ERFURT in 1915.
Allied propaganda managed to create an idea of bayonets equipped with saws as inhuman weapons, which caused manifestations of cruelty to German prisoners captured with similar bayonets. This, in turn, caused panic among the German soldiers, who began to grind saws in front-line conditions. In early January 1918, orders were issued by the Bavarian and Prussian military ministries to remove saws from the butt of blades in all front-line units, thus a variant of the bayonet of the 1884/98 model (new type) appeared with a worn-out saw.
The blade of the bayonet is single-edged, with a dale on both sides and a saw on the butt of the blade (usually 19 double prongs). The handle is formed by two wooden cheeks fastened to the shank with two screws. The hole for cleaning the groove in the handle is rectangular, located in the cheeks of the handle, next to the crosspiece. The handle head has a T-shaped groove with cylindrical expansion and a spring latch with an internal spiral spring arrangement. A short steel crosspiece. The scabbard is made of iron with a hook and a ball at the end.
The total length is 380 mm. The length of the blade is 250 mm. VERY RARE!!!
