The medal was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of 22 December 1942. The Medal "For the Defense of Stalingrad" is awarded to all participants of the defense of Stalingrad - soldiers of the Red Army, Navy and NKVD troops, as well as persons from the civilian population who took a direct part in the defense. The period of defense of Stalingrad is considered 12 July - 19 November 1942. Approximately 759,560 people were awarded the Medal "For the Defense of Stalingrad."
