It was established by King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy on February 20, 1868 in memory of the unification of Italy. The order was intended to be awarded to civilians and military personnel. After 1946, it was replaced by the Order of Merit for the Italian Republic. Until March 18, 1983, the end of his life, King Umberto II continued to award this order.
