The medal was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated July 13, 1950. The medal “For Distinction in the protection of the state Border of the USSR” is awarded to servicemen of the border troops, as well as other servicemen and other citizens for military exploits and special merits shown in the protection of the state border of the USSR. The medal “For Distinction in the protection of the state border of the USSR” was first made of silver (until 1966), later of nickel silver, silver-plated and, finally, of a copper-nickel alloy. The total circulation of the medal is more than 67 thousand copies.
