The initial sign was founded in 1913 as "The sports sign DRA".
In 1933 the name was changed to "The sports sign DRL". In 1937 on the sign the swastika appeared.
The sign awarded young men/men and girls/women aged from 18 up to 40 years which conformed to certain physical requirements. On the status had three degrees:
- the 3rd degree (in bronze) - for successful passing of sports tests by persons aged from 18 up to 32 years
- the 2nd degree (in silver) - for successful passing of sports tests by persons aged from 18 up to 32 years within 8 and more years or for successful passing of sports tests by persons aged from 32 up to 40 years
- the 1st degree (in gold) - for successful passing of sports tests within 7 and more years after obtaining the silver sign or for successful passing of sports tests by persons at the age of more than 40 years
- there was a special rare version of an award (Versehrten Sportabzeichen) intended for disabled veterans.
Tests took place in five steps and had various criteria for men and women.
The sign represented the letters D R L weaved among themselves surrounded with a wreath from oak leaves. In the lower part of the sign the swastika was located.
