The cross is made of a cast iron (magnetic) core of a cross and two silver framework soldered among themselves. The core is painted by black opaque paint. Officially release of crosses of a sample of 1870 proceeded up to 1918 (the last official rewarding with the Iron cross of the 2nd class is dated the period between June 30, 1917 and on July 16, 1917), and small series later - in the Weimar republic and the III Reich. Therefore on appearance, quality and manufacturing techniques signs of various releases differ from each other a little. About 43 000 people are awarded. Very rare.
