The medal was awarded "for feats of humanity, committed with the danger of their own lives, but not suitable for the action of the order's statutes." In April 17, 1828, on the basis of the Regulations of the Committee of Ministers, approved by Emperor Nicholas I, the silver medal "For the Salvation of the Lost"was established. This medal was awarded to Russian citizens for saving people in various tragic circumstances: during fires, natural disasters, and the like.

Silver. The diameter is 29 mm. The weight is 12.1 grams. The medal was worn on the chest on the ribbon of the Order of St. Vladimir.
