His Majesty's cuirassier life guards regiment traces its history back to the Dragoon regiment of Prince Grigory Volkonsky,formed in 1702. The regiment belonged to the so-called "heavy cavalry" From the light cavalry (hussars and others) it was distinguished by the selection of very tall and strong soldiers,as well as weapons-helmets, broadswords and cuirasses (breastplates; from the French " cuirasse"- armor,).
